Blood Agar
Blood agar is used to test bacteria for hemolysis. Hemolysis is the destruction or rupture (lysis) of red blood cells.
The genus Streptococcus
Different species of Streptococcus bacteria can be distinguished from one another according to their ability to destroy red blood cells. In other words, we can use their hemolytic properties to identify them.
Blood agar is made using nutrient-rich agar with the addition of 5% sheep red blood cells.
Blood agar is commonly used to isolate pathogenic streptococci and staphylococci bacteria.
